Cartoon Network’s contemporary expansion of Scooby-Doo lore continues through October 2010 with the debut of the next made-for-TV movie based on the on-going adventures of four teenage crime solvers. The children’s programming channel successfully revived the property’s live-action potential last autumn season with Scooby-Doo! The Mystery Begins, an origin story for Coolsville, Ohio’s most renowned kid detectives. This year, Cartoon Network is following up this initial success with another easy-to-digest family movie, Scooby-Doo! Curse of the Lake Monster.

Fred, Daphne, Velma, and Shag and Scoob are on the trail once again, when another supposed monster goes about terrorizing modern suburbia for seemingly inexplicable reasons.

In Scooby-Doo! Curse of the Lake Monster, the gang heads to a country club and golf course in order to snag a few manageable summer jobs. Unfortunately, as seems to be the case, trouble follows them everywhere. Especially when rumors of a giant frog monster begins circulating among the locals.

Scooby-Doo! Curse of the Lake Monster retains the same creative team behind last year’s venture: Brian Levant (director), Brian J. Gilbert (producer), and Steven Altiere and Daniel Altiere (writers). The computer animation for Scooby-Doo, as before, was produced by The Animation Picture Company (Sherman Oaks, CA).

Also returning is the same core cast from The Mystery Begins. Meanwhile, the story this time around should see the relationships among the four-plus-one team of crime solvers evolve a little; Cartoon Network promises the usual blend of cartoony deductive reasoning and convenient food snacking, with a bit of romance and mystical moonstones thrown in for good measure. Scooby-Doo! Curse of the Lake Monster will premiere on Cartoon Network, Saturday, October 16th (at 7:00pm, ET).

As the group tries to complete assorted tasks at the country club, it becomes abundantly clear that the rumors of the frog monster can’t be ignored for very long. Every small town has their own urban legend or myth, but the tale of the frog monster feels a bit too real (and too opportune) for some.

Scooby-Doo and the gang were planning on taking it easy, but alas, someone has to solve this case — spooky lake or no spooky lake.

Scooby-Doo! Curse of the Lake Monster certainly isn’t Cartoon Network’s only Scooby-related project as of late. The new animated television series Scooby Doo! Mystery Incorporated, still in its first season, debuted on the network earlier this year [recent A.I. news: “New Scooby-Doo Animation News” (07/2010)]. The TV animation injects some sharply revised character dynamics into the old-fashioned mystery-solving formula with rather pleasant results. Cartoon Network also notes Curse of the Lake Monster is scheduled for a home video release early in the 2011-year.
